DURISOL SOUND ABSORPTIVE NOISE BARRIERS

The first Durisol sound absorptive noise barrier was installed in Toronto, Canada, in 1977, over 25 years ago, and is still in service today. In 1987, Durisol supplied the first US based sound absorptive noise barrier to the State of Pennsylvania. Today, Durisol noise barriers can be seen in many Provinces and States all over North America. Internationally, Durisol noise barriers can be found in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Over 7 million square feet have been installed in North America alone.

The System
The Durisol Noise Barrier System is essentially a post and panel system. Vertical posts are anchored to the ground using caissons, driven piles, poured footings or structures. All panels span horizontally between the posts and rest directly on the footings. Post spacings up to 24 feet can be accommodated. Wall heights over 35 feet have been constructed. A standard Durisol noise wall is sound absorptive on both sides: NRC from 0.70 to 0.90 depending on texture and design. The Durisol Noise barrier System is designed to meet all State or Provincial Highway Bridge Design Codes, AASHTO, CHBDC, ASTM, CSA, etc. All manufacturing is carried out under ISO 9002 Standards. Testing for structural integrity, acoustic performance, durability, (such as freeze-thaw, salt scaling, weatherometer and fire), are performed on a regular basis. Reports are available upon request. All assembly of components uses no rigid connections to allow for thermal, frost heave and settlement movements. See web site page “What is Durisol” for more properties.

Applications
Durisol absorptive noise walls have been used for numerous applications such as: highways, rail lines, mass transit lines, industrial and commercial complexes, residential subdivisions, electric utility stations, transformer enclosures, roof top machinery surrounds and tunnel entrances.

Components
A number of optional components and accessories are available to enhance performance, ensure safety and improve aesthetics. All components are fully integrated and are interchangeable with any combination and design and layout.

Panels:
Standard Durisol panels are double sided absorptive. Standard spans are 12 feet and 15 feet. Single sided absorptive panels can range up to 24 feet spans. A variety of surface textures are standard but any surface texture can be custom moulded. Standard finishes provide for one side of the panel to be textured using a form liner and the opposite side to be provided with a pressed in or flat design. Panels where both sides are textured using a form liner are available. Heights and thicknesses of panels depend on spans and application. All panel surfaces are coated with a custom color stain, which also acts as graffiti protection, water repellent and does not degrade the absorptive performance of the wall surface. Integral colour pigments are also available. All stacked panels are supplied with tongue and groove to provide maximum sound transmission loss. Window panels with transparent or translucent Acrylic inserts are also available.

Posts:
Steel posts are standard wide flange sections. They are normally hot dipped galvanized and can be supplied with coloured epoxy coatings.

Pre-cast concrete posts are supplied with vertical chases for receiving and retaining the panels. Posts are usually supplied with steel plates for anchoring to footings or support structures using anchor bolts. Concrete posts can be colour pigmented and surfaces can be textured.

Traffic Barriers:
Durisol has developed a unique pre-cast concrete traffic barrier, with typical New Jersey profile, that fits integrally with the noise wall system and is supported by the noise wall posts and footings. In this case no alternate protection, such as guide rails or slip formed traffic barriers are required.

Earth Retaining Panels:
Where grade differences exist on either side of the noise wall, Durisol panels with increased strength to carry lateral earth loads can be installed. Earth retention up to 10 feet can be accommodated in the design. In this assembly one set of posts and footings carry the retaining wall and the noise wall loads. Retaining wall panels are normally provided with the standard Durisol absorptive facing.

Copings:
Durisol noise walls are supplied with standard copings cast integrally with the top panel. Where aesthetically required, a separate pre-cast concrete coping can be supplied.

Post Facings:
Durisol’s unique post facing for steel posts has been in use for over 15 years. It is a thin Durisol pre-cast element that is clipped on to one or both faces of the steel flanges of the post. Not only does it add to the aesthetic appearance of the wall, it also increases the absorptive surface area of the wall.

Piers:
Durisol piers were designed for the residential market but can be applied to any Durisol noise wall system as an architectural feature to alter the aesthetic appeal of the noise wall. Pre-cast Durisol units are clipped onto the standard noise wall posts. Usually the pier is topped with a pier cap.

Accessories:
Access doors, Gates, Fires hose openings, Fire hydrant attachments, Lighting
